I have only recently come across black soap and the advantages of using it for eczema skin. My friend, who’s Nigerian, kindly gave me a soap to try out. She told me that it’s commonly used in Africa and it’s good for dry skin.
I looked it up to find out more about it and interestingly I came across many people saying how they’ve benefited from using it and how it’s helped with their eczema.
Black soap is usually made in West Africa, mainly in Ghana. It’s not soap in the common sense as it contains no chemicals or SLS (used in almost all soaps) and it’s made of 100% natural ingredients, which is a bonus for eczema sufferers.
I’ve mentioned before that I stopped using all soaps and body washes because they irritate and really dry out my skin. At first, I wasn’t sure what to use as an alternative, I only knew of soaps to wash with!
I turned to Aqueous cream at first. My doctor recommended I use it instead of soaps, and that’s exactly what I did! It was hard to get used to since there was no bubbles, which felt weird, and I just felt like it wasn’t getting rid of the dirt. I got used to it after a while only to discover that actually aqueous is not that good to use on eczema skin.
When I was given the black soap, I tried it out in the shower and instantly fell in love with it. It didn’t irritate my skin at all; in fact, it made it feel soft and hydrated.
The reason why black soap works for eczema is because of its high percentage of shea butter content, which is used as a moisturizer on its own, so you can imagine the advantages of it being in a soap. So not only does it not strip your skin from moisture like other soaps to, it in fact helps moisturize it further. Now to me that’s the qualities of a good soap!
African black soap is also naturally high in glycerine giving it extra moisturizing qualities. Other ingredients commonly found in black soap are palmkernel oil, organic virgin coconut oil and cocoa pods.
It’s also meant to help people who suffer from acne and oily skin, but don’t quote me on this!
I’ve only tried one brand of black soap so far called Dudu-Osun which you can buy from amazon.co.uk. I’ve now ran out so I need to order some more! If you live in the UK and would like to try it out you can find more information here. Or if you live in the US click here.
Has anyone else tried black soap? If so which brands do you recommend?
